The Independent Schools Entrance Exam or the ISEE is an entrance test that determines whether a student will gain admission into a private school. Many private schools in the United States use the ISEE as a guide to assess the educational levels of the child. The ISEE test is highly competitive and is taken by many students each year. A student who hopes to get a good score on an ISEE test must prepare for it well.
The first step in preparing for the ISEE test is to gather information about the test format. A student who knows what to expect in the test is likely to do better than a student who does not. The ISEE test is offered at lower, middle and high school levels and each level has five sections, namely, quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, multiple choice math questions, reading comprehension and an essay. In addition to familiarizing the student with the format, it is also important that the student be made to practice sample ISEE questions. Such practice tests should be timed and taken without the use of calculators. Timing the tests is useful as it helps the students to determine if he is fast enough and will be able to complete each section on time. Since calculators are not allowed in the ISEE, practice questions help students sharpen their mental arithmetic skills.
Many parents hire private tutors to help their child prepare for the ISEE test. Private tutors can be expensive but extremely beneficial. A private tutor, first and foremost, teaches the students everything that is on the curriculum on the ISEE test. Many students lose out on the either ISEE score because they encounter material that they have not learnt or material that is presented differently than they have learnt. There are plenty of techniques that students can learn to help them do well in the mathematics section of the ISEE test. Since the mathematics and reading comprehension sections are multiple-choice ones, a student can use the process of elimination to get to the right answer if he is not sure of the answer. Students who have tough time writing essays must practice. Practice is also essential to those who are unable to complete the essay or other sections within the specified time limit.
Cramming on the night before the test is likely to do more harm than good. Students who get a good night’s sleep have been known to score better.
